Lodève (Occitan: Lodeva) is a French commune, located in the Hérault department and the Occitanie / Pyrénées – Méditerranée region. Its inhabitants are called Lodévois and Lodévoises.
Lodève is located in the hinterland of the Hérault region, 45 km from the prefecture of Montpellier to the east and 50 km from Béziers to the west. It is about 80 km from the Mediterranean Sea and is on the A 75 motorway passing through Millau (12) at 60 km, Marvejols (48) at 120 km, Aurillac (15) at 210 km, Le Puy-en-Velay (43) at 280 km and at 330 km from Clermont-Ferrand (63) by the north of the freeway. This territory of the Massif Central materializes a southern fraction positioned at the border of this mountain. The commune is located in the narrow valley of the Lergue (a tributary of the Hérault river), at the foot of the Causse du Larzac. The commune was a stage to rally, before the rise of the Pas de l’Escalette, the province of Rouergue.
Lodève is a sub-prefecture of the Hérault. Lodève was the seat of a court of first instance whose former premises are now occupied by a House of Justice and Law.
At the last census, the commune had 7,512 inhabitants.
